Our definition of assessment in training for a puppy, novice, intermediate and advanced.

This is the Stoneycairn interpretation of grading dogs ready for training. This might be different to how other people assess are dogs ability.

  • Puppy is a dog this has started informal training through play.
  • Novice is a dog that understands all its basic training component parts independently. For example it can fetch the toy when requested but can’t link the commands. Can fetch, sit, stay but wouldn’t use them all together. Like building a jigsaw but not being able to complete it.
  • Intermediate level is a dog that’s linking all its aspects of training together. An intermediate dog is one that we would recommend doesn’t yet work but is ready to be introduced to a game training situation.
  • An advanced dog is one that is ready to link all the training components on live quarry.
